A captain should always take his job seriously, and that's what Cardiff does. As captain of the ATLAS, he believes he should set an example for some of his rather... unruly... crewmates, though they never seem to follow it. He's given up being strict with them, though. There's no point, they don't listen to him with how they present- the rude, snippy Verve, the lackadaisical Sanford, the overly energetic Thunderstruck, the passive-aggressive Birch... even the soft-spoken Cydonia or timid Veilei. They are his crew, they should be under his command... in some aspects, at least.
Sanford is a hard worker, after all. Who knows how many time's he's kept the ship from falling apart?
Verve? He keeps to himself, and despite his... attitude, he can work well. He just prefers to be on his own.
Cydonia may have some issues, but working his way around navigation charts isn't one of them.
The medics may not actually be medics, but they're good with what knowledge they have and what tools are at their disposal- Thunderstruck is always willing to lend an ear for other types of problems, too. It's not unusual for Cardiff to find her in the dark of the lights-out period for a long, long chat...
